The Story of Cor Unum
The history and story of Cor Unum are long and eventful, dating back over 70 years. Cor Unum is a ceramic studio in ’s-Hertogenbosch where beautiful ceramics are created with great passion and craftsmanship by nationally and internationally renowned designers.
Cor Unum – literally “one in heart” –
is supported by many: ambassadors and students, designers and volunteers, people distanced from the labor market, and professionals. They all share a common ideal: everyone deserves a place, everyone has a talent, and everyone can contribute to making the world a better place.

SURVIVE YOURSELF
Local oakwood: sustainably sawn by wind at national monument wood sawmill De Salamander in Leidschendam, The Netherlands.
The logs come from the The Hague region, Royal estate De Horsten in Wassenaar, the Netherlands.
Cut to size by: miller Rick Vermeulen of De Salamander, craftswoman Marjet Röling and myself
Finishings: Oak finish in eco hardwax
Wooden letters in water-based black paint

The chair I used as a base is a designclassic by Enzo Mari (1932-2020), the Sedia 1 from the Autoprogettazione (proposal for Self-Design) series. The Sedia 1 is a do-it-yourself design from 1974 avant la lettre, with which Mari aims to re-evaluate the process of making and the design process itself. Open Source design which can feel more ‘valuable’ because you make and assemble it yourself. Mari questioned design, preferred functionality above comfort while holding an aversion to decoration and trends. Instead he focused on the manufacturing process and attention to the craft. His queries remain topical and urgent to this day.
The Sedia 1 is fitted with a curved base and a framework supporting wooden text in my own handwriting. Turning the Sedia 1 chair into rocking chair. With the additions I made, I tried not to affect the integrity of Mari’s design. The rocking chair is made of a leftover batch of local oak.

SURVIVE YOURSELF is an invitation to sit down on the rocking chair and take the words dangling above your head into consideration; embrace any possible discomfort, soothe your soul, or be curious, peel off layer-by-layer what resides in your mind and body.

I myself moved between worlds, disciplines, and quite literally physical locations. Moving out of the city, where I was born, raised and worked to the countryside, made me rethink my values, my knowledge and with that my self.

‘SURVIVE YOURSELF’ is presented at a unique location, in the monumental industrial Fokker Terminals in The Hague from Wednesday October 2nd to Sunday October 6th.

SURVIVE YOURSELF is an invitation to sit down on the rocking chair and take the words dangling above your head into consideration; embrace any possible discomfort, soothe your soul, or be curious, peel off layer-by-layer what resides in your mind and body.
